HATTIESBURG, MS — Quarterback Kalieb Osborne delivered a commanding four-touchdown performance to power the University of Connecticut Huskies to a 48-20 victory over Southern Miss on Saturday night at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Renasant Stadium.

With the win, UConn improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Golden Eagles fell to 1-2.

Dominant Start Sets the Tone

UConn established control early, opening the scoring on their first possession. Osborne capped off a 9-play, 75-yard drive with a 38-yard touchdown strike to Shamar Porter. Moments later, after a Braedyn Moore interception set up short field position, Osborne added a 5-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 in the opening quarter.

Southern Miss answered with a 47-yard field goal from Creighton Wilbanks late in the first quarter, but the Huskies continued to pull away. Cyncir Bowers broke open a 42-yard touchdown dash in the second quarter, and kicker Jack O'Connor added field goals of 46 and 29 yards to hand UConn a 27-6 lead at halftime.

Defense and Special Teams Put Game Out of Reach

The Huskies put the game out of reach during a high-powered third quarter. Osborne connected with Trey Cornist on a 1-yard touchdown pass to complete an 11-play drive. On Southern Miss’s very next play from scrimmage, UConn defensive lineman Anas Luqman intercepted a Landry Lyddy pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown, pushing the score to 41-6.

Osborne added his second rushing score of the night on an 11-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, extending the UConn lead to 48-13

  • Passing: Kalieb Osborne (UConn) finished 16-of-22 for 214 yards, 2 TDs, and 0 INTs. Landry Lyddy (USM) came off the bench to complete 14-of-25 passes for 194 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT.

  • Rushing: Cyncir Bowers led UConn's ground attack with 84 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries (7.6 avg). Kenji Christian contributed 64 yards on 15 carries. Steven Robinson paced Southern Miss with 72 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

  • Receiving: Mario Sanders was the top target for the Golden Eagles, hauling in 7 catches for 81 yards. Shamar Porter caught 2 passes for 50 yards and a score for the Huskies.

Southern Miss added a late 10-yard touchdown pass from Lyddy to Jaylen Himes with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
