EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Despite taking an early lead behind a spark from the passing game, the UConn Huskies (1-1) could not hold off a high-powered Maryland attack, falling 38-14 on Saturday afternoon at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.
The Huskies started the game on a high note, striking first with 4:39 left in the opening quarter. Quarterback Kalieb Osborne capped a quick 3-play, 47-yard drive by finding J.D. Willoughby downfield for a 36-yard touchdown strike, firing up the home crowd of 34,494.
However, Maryland (2-0) answered back just over a minute later with a 60-yard passing touchdown to tie the score at 7-7.
From there, the Terrapins began to control the line of scrimmage. Maryland added a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Harry Dalton III and a 19-yard field goal in the second quarter to send UConn into the locker room trailing 17-7 at the half.
The Huskies showed fight mid-way through the third quarter. After Maryland extended its advantage to 24-7, Osborne answered with his second touchdown pass of the day—a 39-yard strike to Shamar Porter—cutting the deficit back to 24-14.
That would be as close as the Huskies would get, as Maryland scored the final 14 unanswered points to seal the victory. UConn's offense struggled to generate consistent momentum, committing eight penalties for 72 yards and converting just 3 of 11 third downs against a tough Maryland defense.
