UConn Dominates Lafayette 56-7 in Season-Opening Rout

Under ideal early-September sunshine, the UConn Football team kicked off its 2026 campaign in commanding fashion. Flaunting explosive playmaking across both quarters of the depth chart, the Huskies routed the visiting Lafayette Leopards 56-7 in front of 31,831 fans at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.

The win delivered an emphatic season-opening statement under first-year head coach Jason Candle, as the Huskies outgained Lafayette 671 to 209 in total offensive yards while putting on a masterclass in balance and efficiency.

UConn needed little time to establish dominance. On the opening drive of the game, quarterback Kalieb Osborne orchestrated a 6-play, 75-yard march capped by a 24-yard touchdown pass to Javon Brown. Osborne followed that up on the next possession with an 18-yard strike to Kenji Christian, expanding the lead to 14-0 midway through the first quarter. Before the opening quarter expired, Osborne punched one in with his legs via a 9-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0.

Osborne put together a clean, high-efficiency afternoon before yielding reps to backup Tucker McDonald. The sophomore play-caller completed 19 of 26 passes for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns while rushing for a game-high 90 yards and 2 additional scores on 8 carries.

The second quarter saw UConn's relentless ground game take control. Cyncir Bowers extended the advantage with a 16-yard touchdown burst, and Christian added a 25-yard rushing touchdown to blow the game open at 35-0 before halftime.

The third quarter featured more of the same high-tempo efficiency. Osborne logged his second rushing score on an 11-yard run, followed shortly by the game’s single most electric play: a 55-yard touchdown breakaway by running back Trey Cornist that elevated the Huskies to a 49-0 cushion.

Cornist averaged an astounding 12.7 yards per carry, finishing with 76 yards on 6 touches. As a team, UConn rushed for 301 total yards and 5 touchdowns, averaging a crisp 7.5 yards per carry.

In the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Tucker McDonald put his own stamp on the victory, connecting with Raymond Liggins III for a spectacular 60-yard touchdown strike. Liggins racked up 58 yards after the catch on the play. Receiver Javon Brown led the receiving room overall with 6 catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Huskies kept Lafayette in neutral for nearly the entire afternoon. The defense combined for 2 sacks and 4 tackles for loss, led by linebacker K'Von Sherman (5 tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFLs) and John Lista (5 tackles, 1 sack).

Lafayette quarterbacks Daniel Lipovski and Jason Penza were under consistent pressure, combining for just 145 yards on 42 attempts (3.5 yards per attempt). The Leopards were held to just 64 net rushing yards on 30 carries.

Lafayette avoided the shutout with 44 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter when Payton Greer pushed into the end zone from 2 yards out to put the Leopards on the board.

With a 1-0 start secured in emphatic style, UConn now turns its focus to week two as they look to build momentum during their home slate at Pratt & Whitney Stadium.
