The Jason Candle Era

Jason Candle took over as the 33rd head football coach in UConn history after signing a six-year deal through the 2031 season. Candle joined the Huskies following a highly successful 10-year run as the head coach at Toledo, where he became the winningest coach in Rocket history with 81 victories, captured two Mid-American Conference (MAC) championships, and earned two MAC Coach of the Year honors.
Known for his high-powered offenses, elite recruiting, and player development, Candle brings a strong background of success to Storrs:
  • Proven Track Record: At Toledo, Candle never had a losing season in ten years as head coach, earning seven bowl berths and leading top-tier MAC recruiting classes.
  • NFL Talent Pipeline: He has developed numerous NFL players—most notably 2024 first-round selection Quinyon Mitchell, as well as NFL standouts Kareem Hunt and Diontae Johnson.

Program History & Legacy

UConn football dates back to 1896, operating at lower division levels for over a century before completing a full transition to the Division I FBS level in 2002.
  • The Big East & Fiesta Bowl Era: The Huskies reached peak national prominence in the late 2000s under head coach Randy Edsall, culminating in a Big East Championship co-title and a historic trip to the 2011 Fiesta Bowlagainst Oklahoma.
  • NFL Pipeline: Over the years, the program has produced notable professional talent, including NFL veterans Byron Jones, Dan Orlovsky, Darius Butler, and Donald Brown, alongside top draft prospects like offensive lineman Christian Haynes.
