Program Overview

The University of Connecticut Huskies women's ice hockey program competes in Division I athletics as a member of Hockey East. Since launching as a varsity sport in 2000, UConn has steadily elevated its standing within one of college hockey's premier conferences, developing into a conference championship contender and regular NCAA Tournament competitor.

The Chris MacKenzie Era & Recent Championship Success

Under head coach Chris MacKenzie, who took over the program in 2013, the Huskies have reached historic program milestones and established a culture centered around elite goaltending and tight-checking defense:
  • Regular Season & Tournament Titles: The Huskies put together a historic 2023–24 campaign, capturing their first-ever Hockey East regular-season title, winning the Hockey East Tournament, and earning their inaugural berth in the NCAA Tournament. UConn added to its trophy showcase by winning another Hockey East Championship in a thrilling double-overtime victory over Northeastern.
  • Individual Excellence: MacKenzie has earned multiple Hockey East Coach of the Year honors, while nurturing elite talent like goaltender Tia Chan, who earned Hockey East Goaltender of the Year recognition and tournament MVP honors.

Program History & Development

Founded at the turn of the century, the Huskies originally competed as an independent before joining the ECAC and subsequently becoming a founding women's member of Hockey East in 2002.
