Hartford Athletic Holds Off Switchbacks 2-1 to Secure Second Straight USL Cup Championship Appearance

Hartford Athletic fended off Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC with a 2-1 victory in the semifinal round of the Prinx Tires United Soccer League Cup, punching their ticket to the championship contest for the second consecutive season.

With the win, Hartford moves on to face the winner of the remaining semifinal matchup between Louisville City FC and San Antonio FC to determine the tournament champion.

Hartford wasted little time breaking the scoreless tie. In just the third minute, Junior Moreira worked a pass into the box to Barry Coffey, who tipped the ball home to give the hosts an early 1-0 advantage.

The Athletic doubled their cushion in the 37th minute. Set up by a curling corner kick from Sebastian Anderson, defender Arturo Diz Pe rose above the defense to head the ball past Colorado Springs goalkeeper Christian Herrera, putting Hartford ahead 2-0 going into the break.

Hartford generated opportunities to put the game out of reach early in the second half. In the 49th minute, a scoring bid from Michee Ngalina was denied by an aggressive save from Herrera. Later, in the 74th minute, Coffey was positioned for his second goal of the night, but his attempt was blocked inside the box by a recovering defender to keep the score 2-0.

Colorado Springs injected drama into the final minutes. In the 82nd minute, a streaking Jonas Fjeldberg slipped a shot past Hartford goalkeeper Antony Siaha to pull the Switchbacks within one. The visitors applied relentless pressure during late stoppage time searching for an equalizer, but Hartford's backline held firm to lock down the 2-1 triumph.

Colorado Springs finished the night with advantages in both corner kicks and total shots on target, but Siaha stood tall in goal for Hartford, turning aside five saves to secure the victory.
